Ch.4′s Schultz Leaving to Work for Mayor Brown

Channel 4 veteran reporter Lorey Schultz is leaving the station in two weeks to work in Mayor Brown’s administration.
Schultz, who has been at the CBS affiliate for 17 years, confirmed today that she will become the assistant director of marketing and communication for the Buffalo mayor’s office.
She’ll work with Mike DeGeorge, the former TV personality and producer who now is the spokesman for the mayor and the Buffalo police department.
“It was time for a change,” said Schultz. “I’ve been here (at Channel 4) a long time. I had a great run at Channel 4. I love the people there and have beautiful memories of the stories I covered and the people I met. It’s time to back away and take on a new challenge.”
She and her husband, former Channel 4 operations manager Tom Garlick, will have to move into the city as part of the requirement for the job. Schultz said the timing is great for her family because she has one child in college and another in high school and she and her husband had planned to downside anyway.
Schultz added she is excited about the job.
“It entails a lot of writing, which I love,” said Schultz, who noted she didn’t realize the job was available until last month. “It happened very quickly.”
Schultz will be getting a significant pay raise in taking the new job, which has been vacant for several months while DeGeorge reorganized the department.
“I’ve been reporting all over Western New York,” said Schultz, a native of Amherst. “I’m from Western New York. What a great opportunity to represent the community in this capacity.”
When I joked that I didn’t realize Schultz was a Democrat like the mayor, Schultz quickly corrected me.
“I’m a Republican,” she said. “They (the mayor’s office) love that. They know I’m qualified for the job and didn’t care about my affiliation.”

  1. And the exodus continues… who’s next?

LIN Media in my opinion has slowly but steadily destroyed the station in the nearly 15 years they have owned it. Not only does the mass exodus continue with good reporters leaving; the quality of the content in the newscasts that have gone downhill as well. If WIVB is still as good as they say they are, why do they keep wanting to steal segments from WGRZ?

WIVB I think needs to do these things.
    1) Get someone to replace Chris Musial because he doesn’t seem to be running the station as well as the past.
    2) At least get a widescreen newscast going. After all, WGRZ/YNN both started that back in early 2010, and now WGRZ is going HD in November after WKBW went HD in August.
    3) See if reporters with actual experience can be added to the mix. Many of WIVB’s newscasts have become unwatchable because the quality of some of the younger staff is just awful. Veteran reporters add a ton of credibility and can actually present a story well.

Ch 4 getting a bigger budget probably fixes these problems.

    • At this point, ANY new reporters would be good. Right now, they only have two general assignment reporters left: Kingston and Richert. The rest are either weekend anchors pulling double duty (Congi, Shapiro, even Segal!), investigative reporters (Vaughters, Moretti) or specialty ones (Ostrow).

      • Pergy's friend says:

Holmes is also doing double duty.

        • Tom says:

Even Bryan Shaw is doing general reporting during the week now. However, it’s not uncommon to see an anchor doing triple duty. On weekends, there have been cases where Nalina Shapiro or even former anchor Mylous Hairston would anchor, report, and then be a sports anchor. Even Channel 7 with its budget problems isn’t going to triple duty.

I see Channel 2 is going to be changing the logo as part of the HD launch. They ran a spot on tv earlier tonight between 7:30-8pm asking viewers to go to wgrz.com/logo and help rank 5 possibilities. As far as I’m concerned, none of them look better than what they have now.
